    Film Location Analysis

“It is a less explored place and is so beautiful. We shot for 45 days and in 13 locations in Portugal. Moreover, Kerala and Portugal have ancient bonds that are evident even today in our food and language. There are so many sweets in Portugal that remind us of our food. When we reached Lisbon, Shah Rukh Khan had just about wound up the shoot of a song for his film. We also shot in Mysore, Chennai, Georgia and Madrid,” Director Roshni Dinaker said in a personal interview, commenting on her choice of Portugal as a location. Dinaker also had high praise for Ana Costa of Cinemate, the Portuguese production company that coordinated the shoot and Ramji Natarajan of Travel Masters, so-called location ‘guru’ working out of Chennai. Not only did Costa and her team facilitate an easy interface with the bureaucracy by arranging permissions to shoot but also created a smooth environment for the shooting of the film on site by manning traffic restrictions and security. Dinaker recalls that traffic was blocked on the busiest public square – Lisbon’s city square – to enable shooting of the film. She also praised the work culture on set where 12-hour schedules meant exactly that in contrast to the elastic schedules at home. Dinaker also hired Cinematographer Dudley (of Singham fame) to shoot the film, as she felt he would do justice to lensing the picturesque locales of the city. While the Steadicam and tracking trolleys were hired locally, Dudley’s equipment of choice - jibs, gimbals and flycams (over the cranes that were more in use by Portuguese film companies) made it necessary to transport them from India. The film was shot on an 18-crore budget and shot across Portugal that offered the director a myriad of ‘textures – city, traffic, chases, alleys, castles, sea and sand’ (Personal Interview). The title of the film was inspired by the hotel ‘My Story’ (located in Rossio Square, Lisbon) where the script writer had stayed on his recce. According to Dinaker, the film’s story had a ‘once-upon-a-time’ fairy-tale quality to it, hence the numerous castles that Portugal offered was a major attraction– the stony ancient facades of the castle exteriors and the plush, red-carpet lined, ceilings with chandeliers and elaborate interiors were shot in the medieval castles of Sintra and Marvao while 150 junior artists were hired locally for the winery scene. Aerial views of Lisbon’s gorgeous city squares overlooking the swell of the Tagus river, the sloping terraced streets and quaint yellow trams that cascade down as well as bustling street cafes offered the film’s ambient setting. Every so often, these gorgeous views are interspersed by a cheat cut to a location in Georgia to match a particular landscape, water body or free ranging highway. The climactic scene in the film, when the couple, Jay (Prithviraj) and Tara (Parvathy), decide to escape to Madrid away from Tara’s evil fiancée, is set in the backdrop of the grand colonnades of the Teatro Nacional D Maria II. Tara urges Jay to make one last wish at the fountain at the Rossio Square while the cab driver pauses for a smoking break. The high- strung chase sequence that follows, starts off in Rossio Square and merges with streets in Georgia, though in the film we are still supposed to be in Portugal. Dinaker explains that the close ups of the car and the couple were taken in Portugal while the long shots were taken in Georgia.
